Description

This classic patty melt recipe is a timeless diner favorite, combining juicy ground beef patties, golden caramelized onions, and melted Swiss cheese on buttery toasted rye bread. Perfect for lunch or dinner, this easy-to-make sandwich is packed with rich flavors and is sure to satisfy cravings. It's the ultimate comfort food for any occasion!

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 tbsp butter, divided
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  • In a skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  • While the onions are cooking, season the ground beef with garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Form into 4 thin patties.
  • In the same skillet, cook the patties over medium heat for 4-5 minutes per side, or until cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  • Wipe the skillet clean and melt the remaining butter. Place 4 slices of rye bread in the skillet and top each with a slice of Swiss cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of Swiss cheese. Add the remaining slices of bread on top.
  • Cook the sandwiches over medium heat until the bread is golden and crispy and the cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  • Slice the patty melts in half and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, use a mix of Swiss and cheddar cheese.
  • Serve with pickles and fries or potato chips for a classic diner experience.
