Description

 

Experience the taste of French onion soup in a burger! These French onion soup burgers are topped with caramelized onions and melted Gruyère cheese, perfect for a gourmet meal at home.


Ingredients

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 4 slices Gruyère cheese
  • 4 burger buns
  • 1/4 cup beef broth


Instructions

  • In a large skillet, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until they start to soften, about 10 minutes.
  • Sprinkle sugar over onions and continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until onions are caramelized, about 20 more minutes. Set aside.
  • Preheat grill to medium-high heat.
  • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined and form into 4 patties.
  • Grill patties for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until desired doneness.
  • During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Gruyère cheese on each patty and allow to melt.
  • Toast burger buns on the grill.
  • To assemble, place patties on buns, top with caramelized onions and a splash of beef broth.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a splash of white wine to the onions while caramelizing.
  • Serve with a side of French fries or a simple green salad.
