Description
Experience the taste of French onion soup in a burger! These French onion soup burgers are topped with caramelized onions and melted Gruyère cheese, perfect for a gourmet meal at home.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 4 slices Gruyère cheese
- 4 burger buns
- 1/4 cup beef broth
Instructions
- In a large skillet, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until they start to soften, about 10 minutes.
- Sprinkle sugar over onions and continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until onions are caramelized, about 20 more minutes. Set aside.
- Preheat grill to medium-high heat.
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined and form into 4 patties.
- Grill patties for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until desired doneness.
- During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Gruyère cheese on each patty and allow to melt.
- Toast burger buns on the grill.
- To assemble, place patties on buns, top with caramelized onions and a splash of beef broth.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add a splash of white wine to the onions while caramelizing.
- Serve with a side of French fries or a simple green salad.
