Ingredients
For the Sugar Cookies:
- 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups white sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
For the Royal Icing:
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons meringue powder
- 5-6 tablespoons warm water
- Red food coloring
Instructions
- Cookies: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a medium bowl, stir together flour and baking powder. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg and extracts.
- Gradually blend in the flour mixture.
- Roll out dough on a floured surface to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut into circles using a cookie cutter.
- Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
- Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until cookies are just beginning to turn golden around the edges. Allow them to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Royal Icing: In a large bowl, whisk together powdered sugar and meringue powder.
- Add warm water one tablespoon at a time until the icing reaches a consistency like honey.
- Take a small portion of the icing and color it red. Keep the larger portion white.
- Using a piping bag or a small zipper bag with the corner cut off, pipe the white icing to completely cover each cookie.
- Once the white icing has set a bit, use the red icing to pipe on the baseball stitching details.
- Allow the icing to set completely before serving.
