Description

This Cabbage Roll Casserole takes all the delicious elements of traditional cabbage rolls and turns them into a simple, one-pot meal. It’s a hearty, comforting dish that combines seasoned ground meat, rice, and cabbage in a savory tomato sauce, baked to perfection.

Ingredients

  • 1 large head of cabbage, chopped
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground pork (optional; replace with additional beef if preferred)
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup uncooked white rice
  • 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes
  • 2 cans (8 ounces each) tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 cups water or beef broth
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheese (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven:

    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Brown the Meat:

    • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef, ground pork, onion, and garlic until the meat is browned and the onions are translucent. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Combine Ingredients:

    • Stir in the chopped cabbage, uncooked rice, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix well. Add water or beef broth and bring the mixture to a boil.
  4. Transfer to Baking Dish:

    • Pour the mixture into a large baking dish. Cover with aluminum foil.
  5. Bake:

    • Bake covered for about 45 minutes. Remove the foil, stir the casserole, and if desired, sprinkle shredded cheese on top. Continue baking, uncovered, for another 15 minutes or until the rice and cabbage are tender and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  6. Serve:

    • Let the casserole cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, replace the meat with a mix of lentils and mushrooms.
  • You can add herbs such as thyme or bay leaves for additional flavor.
