Description
Unleash the fiery potential of authentic Mexican flavors with this Chiltepin Salsa recipe. Made from native chiltepin peppers, this salsa brings the heat to any dish, making it an unforgettable accompaniment that spicy food lovers will cherish.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup chiltepin peppers
- 3 large ripe tomatoes
- 2 cloves of garlic
- 1/2 white onion
- 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
- Salt, to taste
- Water (as needed)
- 1-2 tablespoons vegetable oil (optional, for smoother texture)
Instructions
- Prep the Ingredients: Roughly chop the tomatoes, garlic, and onion. Measure out the chiltepin peppers - be careful handling them, and consider using gloves as they are very spicy.
- Toast the Peppers: In a hot, dry skillet, toast the chiltepin peppers for about 30 seconds, or until they start to darken and become fragrant. Don't let them burn as they can become bitter.
- Blend the Salsa: Transfer the toasted chiltepin peppers to a blender. Add the chopped tomatoes, garlic, onion, and a bit of water (to aid in blending). Blend until you achieve your desired consistency, either chunky or smooth.
- Season and Finalize: Add the chopped cilantro and salt to taste. For a smoother texture and richer flavor, you can heat oil in the skillet and pour the salsa from the blender into the hot oil, letting it simmer for a few minutes.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the salsa to cool to room temperature. Transfer it to a serving bowl and serve with your favorite dishes.
