Description

Ingredients

For the Meat Sauce:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 lb ground pork (optional)
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (6-ounce) can tomato paste
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons parsley, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon basil
  • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

For the Cheese Mixture:

  • 3 cups ricotta or cottage cheese
  • 2 beaten eggs
  • 2 tablespoons parsley, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Additional:

  • 12 Mueller's lasagna noodles, uncooked

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Meat Sauce: In a large pot, brown the beef, pork (if using), onion, and garlic. Once browned, drain excess fat. Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, water, sugar, salt, pepper, parsley, basil, and Parmesan cheese. Simmer uncovered for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  2. Prepare the Cheese Mixture: In a separate bowl, combine ricotta or cottage cheese, eggs, parsley, salt, pepper, and half of the grated Parmesan cheese.
  3. Cook the Lasagna Noodles: Follow the package instructions for Mueller's lasagna noodles. Once done, drain and lay flat on aluminum foil to prevent sticking.
  4. Assemble the Lasagna: In a 13x9-inch baking dish, spread one cup of meat sauce. Place 4 lasagna noodles over the sauce. Spread one-third of the cheese mixture over the noodles, sprinkle with mozzarella, and then top with more meat sauce. Repeat layers ending with the meat sauce. Sprinkle with remaining Parmesan cheese.
  5. Bake: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Uncover and bake an additional 25 minutes or until hot and bubbly. Let stand for 10 minutes before cutting.
