Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 4 tbsp butter (for grilling)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Secret Sauce Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp pickle relish
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika


Instructions

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat, add butter, and cook onions until caramelized, about 15 minutes. Set aside.
  • Shape ground beef into 4 thin patties. Season with salt and pepper.
  • In the same skillet, cook patties for 3-4 minutes per side until fully cooked.
  • For the secret sauce, mix together mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, relish, garlic powder, and smoked paprika in a small bowl.
  • Assemble the patty melts: Place a cooked patty, a slice of Swiss cheese, and caramelized onions between two slices of rye bread.
  • Grill the assembled sandwiches in the skillet with butter over medium heat until bread is golden and cheese is melted, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  • Serve hot with extra secret sauce on the side.
