Description

This Sausage and Peppers Sandwich with Cheese recipe offers a delightful combination of savory Italian sausage, sweet bell peppers, and melted cheese. Ideal for a quick and tasty meal, this sandwich is a family favorite.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb Italian sausage links
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 yellow bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp dried basil
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/2 cup marinara sauce
  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • 8 slices provolone or mozzarella cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sausage links and cook until browned on all sides, about 8-10 minutes. Remove sausages and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, add sliced peppers, onion, and garlic. Cook until vegetables are tender, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Slice the browned sausages into 1-inch pieces and return them to the skillet with the vegetables. Add oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, and marinara sauce. Stir to combine and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Open hoagie rolls and place on a baking sheet.
  • Spoon the sausage and pepper mixture into each roll. Top each sandwich with two slices of cheese.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 5-7 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Serve hot and enjoy.

Notes

  • For a spicier sandwich, use hot Italian sausage and increase the red pepper flakes.
  • Add a splash of red wine to the skillet while cooking the vegetables for added depth of flavor.
