Description

Ingredients

  • 1 can (28 oz.) whole tomatoes or crushed tomatoes
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2-3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • A small bunch of fresh basil, roughly torn
  • 1 tsp dried oregano (optional)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional)
  • Red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/2 cup red wine (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a skillet, heat olive oil and sauté onion until translucent. Add garlic and sauté until fragrant.
  2. Add crushed tomatoes with their juice to the skillet.
  3. Season with basil, oregano, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes.
  4. If using, pour in the wine and let it simmer briefly.
  5. Allow the sauce to simmer for 20-30 minutes, adjusting thickness if necessary with water or broth.
  6. Taste and adjust seasoning, adding sugar if too acidic.
  7. Serve with pasta or use as desired.

Notes

  • Butter or heavy cream can be added at the end for extra richness.
  • Sauce can be refrigerated for up to a week or frozen for longer.
