Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef (or pork)
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 tsp allspice
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 12 oz pasta (penne or rigatoni)
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella or Swiss cheese
- Fresh parsley (optional for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish and set aside.
- In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, onion, garlic, allspice, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Form into small meatballs.
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and cook meatballs until browned on all sides. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, melt butter. Stir in flour to make a roux, then gradually whisk in beef broth and heavy cream. Add Worcestershire sauce and let the sauce simmer until thickened, about 5 minutes.
- Meanwhile, cook pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- Combine cooked pasta, meatballs, and sauce. Transfer to the prepared baking dish and top with shredded cheese.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.
Notes
- For a shortcut, use frozen Swedish meatballs and jarred sauce.
- Add a dash of nutmeg to enhance the flavor of the cream sauce.
