Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey/chicken for a leaner option)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 packet taco seasoning mix (or homemade mix as detailed in notes)
- 2/3 cup water
- 1 tablespoon cooking oil (if needed)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a skillet over medium heat, if using lean meat, add the cooking oil. For fattier meats, you can skip the oil.
- Add the chopped onion to the skillet and sauté until translucent.
- Add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook until browned.
- Drain excess fat if necessary.
- Sprinkle the taco seasoning over the meat. Add water and mix well.
- Let the mixture simmer for 5-7 minutes, or until the liquid reduces and the meat is fully coated with the seasoning.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat.
Notes
- For a homemade taco seasoning mix, combine 1 tablespoon chili powder, 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/4 teaspoon onion powder, 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes, 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano, 1/2 teaspoon paprika, 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin, 1 teaspoon sea salt, and 1 teaspoon black pepper.
- You can customize the recipe by adding diced tomatoes, bell peppers, or jalapeños for added flavor and texture.
