Description
Experience the taste of the Himalayas with this Tibetan Bread Recipe. Soft, fluffy, and perfect with a dollop of butter or jam, it's a breakfast essential when in Tibet and now, in your own kitchen!
Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1 to 1.5 cups water (or as needed)
- Oil for frying (like vegetable or canola oil)
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder. Gradually add in water, mixing continuously until you form a soft, pliable dough.
- Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, or until it's smooth and elastic.
- Rest the Dough: Place the dough back in the bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rest for about 30 minutes.
- Shape the Bread: Divide the dough into small round balls, about the size of a golf ball. Using a rolling pin, roll each ball into a flat circle, about 1/4-inch thick.
- Frying: Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Once hot, gently place one of the rolled-out dough circles into the oil. Fry until it puffs up and turns golden brown, which should take about 2-3 minutes on each side. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- Serve: Serve warm with butter, jam, honey, or any preferred accompaniment.
