Ingredients
- 1 cup warm water (110°F)
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
- 3 tablespoons butter, softened
- 2 tablespoons milk (for brushing)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar in the warm water. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for about 5 minutes, until frothy.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, egg, and softened butter.
- Mix until a dough forms. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Flatten each ball slightly and cover with a damp cloth. Let rise for another 30-45 minutes, until puffy.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the tops of the buns with milk.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes, until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
- For a shiny top, you can brush the buns with an egg wash instead of milk.
- These buns can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days, or frozen for longer storage.
